Beer Review: Broo Doo

Reviewing the Broo Doo from Three Floyds Brewing Company.
Score: 91

2011 vintage bomber bottle poured into a Duvel tulip glass.

Appearance: Pours a translucent orange copper color with two fingers of foamy cream-colored head that settles into a nice thin layer. Excellent lacing. 4.5/5

Smell: Lots of fresh tropical fruit citrus aromas -- oranges, grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and tangerines. Dank, earthy, piney hop resin too. A little floral. There's definitely some hints of sweet caramel-toffee too. There are also some very sweet malt aromas that remind me of Founders Devil Dancer in the nose. 4.5/5

Taste: Earthy, dank pine hoppiness hits first. Then a heavy malt backbone takes over. Pineapples noticeable on the mid-palate. As the beer layers, mango-lemon citrus flavors come through gradually. Toffee sweetness also comes through on the mid-palate. Lingering finish is dry and bitter and gets increasingly spicier as I get farther down the glass, which complements the beef jerky I am eating quite well. 4/5

Mouthfeel: A little oily, medium-light bodied with medium-high carbonation that makes the citrus-hops and spicy characteristics of the beer pop on the tongue. Finish is dry and bitter. 4/5

Overall: A delicious wet hopped IPA that stands up to some of the best in its class, including Founders' Harvest Ale. Three Floyds found the ideal nexus of hoppy bitterness and malty sweetness with this beer, without overdoing either. Should be enjoyed fresh.

Recommendation: Beer geeks will probably love the powerful, fresh citrus aromas of this beer and savor its ample flavor. At the same time, the beer is not too hop-forward, so casual beer drinkers might find this to be a great starter IPA.

Pairings: Great Dane Scotch Ale Beef Jerky.

Cost: $9.49 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.
